Buying with a VA loan
A VA loan is one of the best ways to buy a home, and Florida adds property tax help for disabled veterans.
- Many VA loans need no down payment, and there's no monthly mortgage insurance.
- There's a one-time VA funding fee, often added to the loan. Veterans who receive VA disability compensation are generally exempt.
- The home has to pass a VA appraisal, which checks the value and basic condition. A condo has to be on the VA's approved list, so ask before you offer.
- Florida gives disabled veterans property tax help: an extra $5,000 exemption at 10% or more service-connected disability, and a full exemption on a homestead at 100% permanent and total. Your county property appraiser confirms what applies.
